VC drops
season opener vs. Leigh 11/22
Valley Christian - 1, Leigh High School - 3
The
Valley Christian boys varsity soccer team traveled to Leigh High School
to open it's season. Upon arriving, the perfectly manicured grass
stood out immediately, and the weather was ideal. The game even started
off well...
Playing without GK Ben Hansen, defensive
mid Ryan Corry, and center mid
Jeff Coggan, the Warriors took a few
minutes to find their legs. In the meanwhile GK Brad McLaughlin
made save after save to keep the game level. Once VC got going,
the momentum switched. Andrew Smith
took a ball from Austin Keeling and took
on two defenders, while being fouled repeatedly, and dribbled into the
box. The ref whistled for a PK just as Smith buried his shot just below
the crossbar. VC Captain Cole Bales
took the Penalty and staked the Warriors to a 1-0 lead just before half.
Center
mid's Joey Stryker and Keeling
consistently put pressure on the Longhorn backline with darting runs and
pinpoint passes.
In the
second half, VC lost the services of it's starting sweeper and captain
Garrett Ruiz, and defensive mid David
Nettemeyer to injury. McLaughlin did all he could to keep Leigh at bay,
but they eventually broke through, scoring 2 goals. In the waning
moments of the game, they added a third to complete the game.
Overall a tough match in which Leigh dominated for big chunks, VC will
look forward to a possible rematch in CCS.
