Boys
Varsity ties S.I. on the road. 12/11
Valley Christian 1, St. Ignatius 1
The Warriors boys
soccer team traveled to USF on Saturday to play the St. Ignatius
Wildcats. The USF stadium, home to the University of San Francisco Dons,
sports perfect field turf set in a beautiful part of the city. The
weather was perfect as the Warriors sought their first win of the
season.
Injuries continue to
plague VC. Starting forward Andrew Smith is
nursing the concussion he suffered vs. St. Francis,
Chase Harrell has a high ankle
sprain, Nathan Goldsmith is out for the
year with a hurt knee, and Jeff Coggan was
away at the Final Four Showcase in Carson, CA.
Even with a truncated
lineup, the Warriors put pressure on S.I. early and were able to score
in the 28th minute. On a free kick, Ryan Corry
sent the ball into Chris Zambataro who
laid it off to Peter Osuna near the penalty
spot. Peter did well to blast the ball past the S.I. keeper,
staking VC to a 1-0 lead.
As well as the team
played, even short handed, it just wasn't the day for the first win. S.I.
fought back, and scored a sensational goal on a one timer from just
outside the 6 yard box making the score 1-1.
The Warriors defense
kept a high powered S.I. offense at bay for most of the game with strong
performances from Garrett Ruiz and Chris
McElhatton.
The VC boys host Mitty
on Tuesday, and the match promises to be one of the toughest of the
year. Jeff Coggan will return to the lineup while Smith and
Harrell are questionable.
