If tying is like
kissing your sister, the Warriors may have a problem. For the 4th time
this young season, VC tied. This time it was vs. high powered,
nationally ranked Archbishop Mitty.
After a lackluster
performance that saw Mitty race to a 1-0 lead, the Warriors had some
work to do. Defensive excellence is becoming a regular event at
the VC games as Garrett Ruiz,
Ryan Corry, and Chris McElhatton kept the
game close.
After a brief halftime
speech, the tables turned.
Finally the Warriors
were able to start moving the ball. The possession changed to
their favor and they were able to break through in the 60th minute.
Corry hit an absolute blast off a direct free kick that gave the keeper
no chance. 1-1.
Just moments later, a
slot pass led to Mitty's 2nd goal.
Finally, with 8
minutes remaining VC equalized. Jeff
Coggan took a ball off his chest around the top of the box and
rifled it into the back of the net to tie the score.
The momentum continued
in VC's favor as they pressured the Mitty backline. Some unlucky plays,
and some fortunate plays led to a good result in this one. VC's record
now stands at 0-3-4.
After the game, coach
Donny Fugate had some comments.
"I think the boys showed well in that second half. If we can
believe in ourselves enough to string 80 minutes of Valley Christian
soccer together, we'll start to win."
The Warriors will
travel to Sacred Heart this Saturday in search of that first victory.
The possible return of starting forward Andrew
Smith (concussion) will give VC a boost.
