04-05 season ends with CCS loss 2/16
Valley Christian 2, Hillsdale 3
The 2004-2005 boys
varsity soccer season came to a close on Wednesday with a 3-2 loss to
Hillsdale High School. The Warriors took the long bus ride to San Mateo
high school where the first round CCS matchup would take place.
The Warriors, dressed
in their blue and white striped jerseys, stepped onto the field ready to
put an up and down season behind them. The game started off with chances
for each side, but in the 10th minute Hillsdale broke through.
With back to back
goals 10 minutes apart, the Knights were staked to a 2-0 lead.
Just before half,
Andrew Smith had a gutsy collision with the
Knights goalkeeper and Chris Zambataro
was there to put the ball into an empty net. 2-1.
As the second half
began, the Warriors knew that they needed an early goal to change the
momentum. In the 54th minute, it came.
Ryan Corry took a free kick around the top
of the 18 yard box and played a square ball to
Joey Stryker. Joey hit a rocket from
about 20 yards that the goalie tried to save but it got by him. 2-2.
With approximately 10
minutes remaining, the Knights broke through one final time. The outside
midfielder swung in a brilliant cross that was met by an onrushing
forward who finished the header. 3-2.
The Warriors pressured
the Knight's goal furiously in the last 10 minutes, getting chance after
chance. It was just not meant to be.
Coach
John Basanese had this to say
after the final whistle sealed his team's fate.
"This kind of thing is
never easy to take. We really believed that we could win this game and
go deep into CCS. The kids gave us what they had today and it just
didn't work out. In my mind it doesn't take anything away from another
successful season. We are blessed to get to share the field with these
great kids."
The Warriors will lose
8 seniors to graduation, a hit that will be difficult to take.
"We are losing some
high quality players and leaders who will definitely be missed" said
Basanese. "That said, it'd be naive to think that we won't be strong
again next year. This program has lots of young talent, and a good
number of kids who are going to produce big years in their senior
campaign."
