Sunnyside Travels From Fresno, Beats VC 12/20
The Warriors hosted
Sunnyside High School, from Fresno, for the second time in 6 years
today. Sunnyside traveled from Fresno, and arrived at VC about an hour
before kickoff. The Warriors, coming off a 3-0 loss to CCS #2 Gilroy,
were looking to get a win before the holiday break.
The game started off decently for VC until the 6th minute. A Sunnyside
player played a ball that found it's way through two Warrior defenders
right to the foot of a a striker who redirected it past
Austin Mansker, 1-0 Sunnyside.

video here.
From that point on the Warriors would trade chances with Sunnyside, with
one goal called back on a questionable offsides call (see
it here) The Sunnyside back-line did a good job of keeping the VC
forwards off balanced, said Coach
Basanese.
"They were pretty aggressive with their offside trap. That's one of
those things that either really works for you, or really works against
you. If we do a little better job of adjusting up top, we probably
would've had 3 goals in each half. Give credit to Sunnyside, it worked
for them today."
VC conceded a penalty kick late in the first half, but the Sunnyside
player's shot was wide right.
See the penalty kick
here. The game would go into halftime in favor of Sunnyside, 1-0.
The second half saw VC dominate play, save for a few Sunnyside counter
attacks. The play was mostly in VC's offensive end with
George Fahmy and
Alex de Leon having near misses.
"To be honest, these kind of days happen. It was great to see Alex and
George working well together. We have to finish our chances, and we
didn't do that today. I thought our forwards played very dynamic games,
we just didn't have the final touch," Basanese said.
Mansker made several key saves to keep the score at 1-0, something that
has been commonplace since his freshman year last year.
"He makes the tough saves look easy, and he makes impossible saves that
no other goalkeeper in CCS would make. The scary thing is that he does
it consistently. If we can stop our defensive breakdowns, we'll start
winning games," Coach Donny Fugate
said.
Sunnyside would score in injury time to make the final 2-0.
The Warriors will spend the Christmas break preparing for WCAL play to
resume. They will take on the CCS' top team, Bellarmine. The Bells are
also the top team in the Western US according to studentsports.com.
Needless to say, VC has it's work cut out for them. The game will be at
VC on the 3rd of January.
Special thanks to Amy Thomas and Cheryl Lee for taking video of the
game, and John Basanese Sr. for his great pictures,
which can be found here.
