Fugate named assistant coach 5/23
In his first official move
as the new head coach, John
Basanese has added Donny Fugate as his assistant.
Coach Fugate was with the team
for two seasons previously, and also is the head coach of the Valley
Christian freshman football team.
"In coach Fugate, we have
added an experienced coach, who is also an on-campus teacher and has
great relationships with the kids. Even though there were a lot of
options, this was a no brainer for me," Basanese said.
Fugate was largely
responsible for the development of a defense in '03-'04 that gave up
only 24 goals in 26 games. That team went on to win a WCAL
championship, and fared well in the CCS playoffs.
"Donny played college ball,
and is still a great player today. He has proven himself to be a
great defensive coach, who also does great work with midfielders.
We will draw on that experience this year as we prepare for the season,"
added Basanese.
Coach Fugate seemed equally
excited when asked about his new position.
"I am excited about the
challenge of coaching this group of guys. This is the year when some of
our lesser known players can step out and make a name for themselves in
the WCAL."
"I feel honored to be returning to such a well structured program. It
feels like coming home. I can’t wait to work with Coach Basanese, and
all of the talented young men on the team."
"I plan on giving special emphasis to the defenders. If we are strong in
the back, we will always be in games."
As the school year wraps
up, the men's soccer program has taken another step to make sure that
the team is well coached.
"It's tough to even explain
how great this is for our program. Donny and I have already met,
and we are very excited for this season. His ideas are forward
thinking, and our visions for this program are aligned already.
This is a big day for VC Soccer!" Concluded Basanese.
