Jake Joseph

Warriors Lose Lead, Fall To Gunn 11/21

The Warriors opened their regular season Wednesday with a home game against perennial CCS powerhouse, Gunn High School.  The players had a half day, and after a nice team lunch, they were ready to go.

Right off the starting whistle, the Warriors and Titans each had good possession moments with minor chances going to each team.

In the 23rd minute of the match, Jake Joseph put the Warriors on the scoreboard.

VC was awarded a direct free-kick from about 10 yards outside the 18 yard box, and to the right.  Jake stepped up, and placed the ball perfectly past the keeper into the far post upper-V.

A video highlight of the goal can be found here.

"Good shooters get goals like that," coach John Basanese said.  "Whether he meant that to be a cross or a shot is irrelevant to me.  He did what we ask, which is to put the ball in a dangerous spot, and this time he scored.  Next time maybe somebody puts it away in there, either way it's a goal."

A few minutes later, sophomore Alex de Leon had a great chance when he found himself alone with the Gunn 'keeper.  The goalie was up to the task, and de Leon was denied.

The game would go to the half with VC up 1-0, and both teams playing well.

The second half began with Gunn applying consistent pressure.  Austin Mansker made some key saves to keep the Titans off the board.

In the 63rd minute, Gunn would finally break through when a shot was deflected on it's way to goal found it's way in.  The ball appeared to not cross the line, but it was called a goal by the AR. 1-1.

Gunn kept the pressure on, and eventually broke through again on a corner kick that was headed home.

The Warriors, now down 2-1, pressed forward 3 forwards to make an attempt at an equalizer.  The attempt failed, and Gunn scored once more in injury time.

The game would end 3-1, with lots of good things to work on for the Varsity side.

Game Notes: Jake's goal was the first of his VC varsity career, in fact it was his first points!
