Warriors Get Back on Winning Track vs. Sunnyside

The Valley Christian Warriors welcomed Sunnyside High School from Fresno out to San Jose for an official non-league game on Tuesday. Though rain was in the forecast, the weather held up.

The game started off well for the Warriors who had opportunity after opportunity.  However, it was tough to get anything going offensively with 9 offsides calls in the first 10 minutes, one coming on a throw-in...

Sunnyside challenged the VC goal a few times, forcing Austin Mansker to make a great point blank save to keep the game level.

The game would go to half-time tied at zero.

After a refocusing effort in the locker room, the Warriors came out firing in the second half.

The scoring got started with an awesome individual effort by Kevin Tarangioli.  Kevin took the ball around midfield, and dribbled through several defenders before feeding Alex de Leon.  Alex outraced the 'keeper to the ball, and touched it around him.  As he attempted to go by, the goalie took out de Leon's ankles, penalty kick.

Kevin stepped up and placed the ball expertly past the goalie, 1-0.

Video of the buildup can be seen here.  Video of the PK is coming.

The second goal of the game came on a 'Jiggly puff' from Jake Joseph.  The free-kick came from about 30 yards out and, with the help of several players jumping in front of the goal, beat the keeper. 2-0 VC.

The final goal came with 5 minutes remaining.  Sam Mathison opened his account after receiving a pass from Britt Nelson that found it's way through 2 defenders.  Sam took a quick shot, and buried it into the left side netting, a great goal. 3-0 VC.

Video of Sam's goal can be found here.

The game ended 3-0, as freshman goalkeeper Patrick Colombana held the clean sheet for the Warriors.

VC will have a few days off before resuming training in preparation for Bellarmine on January 7th!

Game Notes:

- Sam Mathison's goal was the first of his varsity career.
