Valley Christian Downs SHP 3-1 (11/24)
The
Warriors suited up, Monday, to play their 6th game in 5 days, this one
against perennial division III finalist Sacred Heart Prep. The SHP
team travelled to Valley Christian for both teams' second game of the
season.
The weather was perfect for the game with temperatures
around 70 degrees, and very little wind. The game kicked off
promptly at 3:15pm.
The Warriors, coming off a successful scrimmage with
Concord on Saturday, came out very strong. The back four did a
tremendous job of starting the attack, and Valley held possession for
the first 15 minutes consistently.
In the 16th minute, Austin Mansker made an incredible
reaction save to keep the score level. A SHP player won a free
kick just outside the 18 yard box. The ball was swung in, right to
an open man who put his shot on goal. Austin moved quickly to his
right with nice footwork, before sprawling out to make the reaction
save.
Video of the save can be seen here.
Assistant coach, Donny Dequine saw this as a possible turning point for
the game.
"We're fortunate that we have one of the best goalkeepers in the
country, or it's 1-0 right there. I think after that, the guys
stepped it up a little."
The game continued with VC holding the possession. The SHP players
proved skilled and dangerous with the ball, but Valley did well to
squash any chances.
The game would change with 5 minutes to play in the half. Senior
midfielder, Kevin Tarangioli, expertly brought down a punt from the SHP
goalkeeper and found Britt Nelson on the outside. Britt found
Kevin open again in the middle and fed him a brilliant pass.
Tarangioli beat his defender and took a 30 yard left footed shot that
was too much for the goalkeeper. 1-0 VC.

The game went to half 1-0 VC.
The second half started out well for Sacred Heart Prep. A SHP
midfielder won a ball about 35 yards out and hit a scorcher that looked
to be going over the goal, before sliding into the net just below the
cross bad. A fantastic shot, 1-1.
The Warriors would battle back and re-take the lead in the 60th minute.
Britt Nelson pounced on a turnover inside the SHP 18 yard box, caused by
Trevor Plug. Britt turned and placed a shot into the far post
upper-v. 2-1 VC.
Video of the goal can be found in the full game highlights.
Moments later, in the 65th minute, Trevor Plug would close out the
scoring. Britt Nelson swung in a great corner kick which found
Plug waiting far post. He was clinical with the finish, and that
capped the scoring, 3-1 VC.
The game served as the final 'tune-up' for the team, and coach Basanese
thinks that they are ready for a grueling pre-season, and league slate.
"Sacred Heart Prep is a good team. Those kids did well, I thought.
We just kept possession of the ball, and that's tough to play against.
I was pretty happy with the way the guys responded after SHP tied the
game, and the way we closed things out. The defense played great,
the reserves saw some time, which is important, and we got some nice
goals. I still think we need to be better in the final third of
the field, but we're working on that. Overall, a great game for
us."
The Warriors will have some much needed rest between games, and will
take on the Westmont Warriors next Tuesday at 7pm, at Valley Christian
(football field). Come out and support the team!
