Lawson Buries Winner to Beat Riordan 1/30

Sophomore Jared Lawson scored with 10 minutes remaining to give the Warriors a 2-1 win in San Francisco today.  For Lawson, it was the first goal of his varsity career...and it couldn't have come at a better time.

The Warriors jumped out to an early lead when Danny Hittler scored on a free kick in the 14th minute.  Repeated chances by VC came up empty as the Riordan 'keeper played great.

in the 50th minute, the assistant referee insisted that Riordan be awarded a Penalty kick for some contact in the box.  Sophomore goalkeeper Patrick Colombana dove to his left to save the Penalty, but the AR had other ideas.  Saying that Patrick moved early (video coming), the ref pointed to the spot again.  The Riordan player would not miss again, 1-1.

The Warriors outshot Riordan 14-3, and finally broke through in the 70th minute.

Chas Ballard collected a ball around midfield and sent Lawson through on a 50 yard breakway.  Nobody came close to catching him as he beat the goalkeeper for the win.

"Not much to say, really.  I was obviously pleased that Jared pulled that one back for us.  It was a well taken goal, and one that we clearly needed.  Overall ithe game didn't go the way wee would've liked, but we got a result.  That's what matters at this point in the season," Coach John Basanese said following the game.

The Warriors will host Bellarmine on Wednesday, come out and cheer on the team!

Postgame Quotes:

Assistant coach Ronald Jenkins on Jared's goal:

"Jared did everything right on his goal.  He kept his composure, picked his spot, and hit the back of the net."

Assistant coach David Fugate on the defense today:

"I thought we had solid marking and good distribution out of the back.  It's nice to have our defense factor into our attack again."
