Coggan scores first
college hat trick in win over Chico State 10/27
When Seattle
Pacific University signed Valley Christian MVP Jimmy Coggan, they knew
they were getting the WCAL’s leading scorer, MVP, and 2-time All League
player. They also knew they were inking a deal with a player whose
resume included 1st Team All-CCS, 30+ career goals, two years
as team captain, and club soccer accolades a mile long. However, all
involved parties wondered how soon this would translate to success at
the NCAA level.
Coggan’s first
career college hat trick Wednesday night will serve as notice that he’s
beginning to pick up where he left off. VC fans grew accustomed to his
breathtaking finishes and deft runs that SPU now benefits from.
James entered the
game in the 20th minute and broke a scoreless deadlock with 3:25 left in
the first half. He took a errant defensive clearance on the left wing
and sprinted 35 yards into the box before blasting an 8-yard shot under
Wildcats goalie Scott Doty.
David Selby set-up
the next two SPU goals. Selby drove a low cross through the box which
Nick Letts (Jr., Dublin, Ca.) flicked to the far post for a wide-open
Coggan to bury from 10 yards in the 56th minute.
Coggan completed
his hat trick in the 72 minute, running on to Nate Elmenhurst¹s through
pass and scoring from 12 yards. It was the fifth goal of the season for
Coggan to go with 3 assists. His 13 points put him at second on the team
in scoring.
SPU (12-2-2)
resumes Great Northwest Athletic Conference play Saturday afternoon at
top-ranked Seattle University. Big players show up in big games, check
