Coaches name 07-08 Captains (10/20/07)
In
an attempt to have strong leadership within the team starting at
tryouts, the VC coaches decided to name captains early this year. While
this represents a change from the previous 5 seasons, coach
John Basanese sees it as an
important move.
"In years past, we've elected captains after tryouts.
However, in our offseason discussions,
Donny (Fugate) and I decided
that we wanted to start the season out strong as far as leadership is
concerned. We hope that this will allow us to hit the ground
running, more so than in years past," Basanese said.
This year's captains are as follows:
Christian de Leon, Senior, MF: A third
year varsity player, Christian will bring great leadership to the team.
His efforts to organize an offseason running program for VC players will
pay dividends early in the season.
Tyler Seaman, Senior, D: Another third year
varsity player who has played a very important role in several VC games,
Tyler will enter this season as a team captain. Tyler's natural
leadership skills, and great attitude made him an easy choice.
John Walitsch, Senior, M: Yet another
third year varsity player, Walitsch will look to add to his already
impressive VC career. As a Junior, John tallied the winning goal
against Mitty, and his other goal came in the school's first ever tie
with Bellarmine. John has the respect of his teammates, and will
be a field general in the center mid.
As is a Valley Christian men's soccer tradition, the captains and
coaches were taken to dinner by Mr. Joe Nettemeyer. Mr.
Nettemeyer's kids came through our program, and he is a great leader in
the community.
The dinner was held at A.P. Stumps again, and it was a great success.
We discussed what it means to be a leader, and the upcoming season.
Note: Tyler Seaman had to miss the Captain's dinner due to prior
commitments to the VC Cross Country team. He was missed, but we will
catch him up on what was discussed.
With three strong leaders, Coach Fugate
sees this year as a great opportunity for the guys.
"I hope that the captains take what they
learned from the dinner with Mr. Nettemeyer, and use those things to
become strong leaders. This is not a situation where these guys
have arrived, rather, the beginning of a great opportunity to grow their
leadership skills and help this program succeed. They're well
positioned to do that, and we're excited!" Fugate said.
The season starts today, and win or
lose, the team will have great leadership!
