Coggan's heroics lift Warriors. 1/22
Valley Christian 1, Sacred Heart Cathedral 0
Saturday's game versus
Sacred Heart Cathedral had tons of playoff implications. The Valley
Christian Warriors boys varsity soccer team is in must-win land. Ties
won't do it, losses won't do it...it has to be wins from here out. With
four games remaining, the stage was set for part one.
The game was mainly
dominated by the Warriors who time after time challenged the Sacred
Heart defense. However, the clear cut chances were not coming. Not many
of the opportunities turned into obvious goal scoring opportunities.
At half time, the game
was tied at 0-0.
The second half was
more of the same at first. Lots of good possession but no goals.
Ryan Corry led the defense with outstanding
play. Sacred Heard rarely got a good shot on
Ben Hansen who kept his 4th clean sheet of the year and the 22nd of
his fine career.
Of vcsoccer.com's man
of the match, Ryan Corry, coach
Basanese said "Ryan has been huge for us all year. His intelligence
back there is incredible. He gives us 4-5 goal scoring opportunities
each game with his ability to drive a ball 50 yards. It's hard to
imagine where we'd be without him as our sweeper."
In the 70th minute,
the Warriors switched to a 3 man front line and finally the chances
began to appear.
In the 76th minute,
Peter Osuna played a brilliant cross in to
the back post where the WCAL's leader in goals and assists,
Jeff Coggan, was waiting. Jeff was able to
finish the goal with a diving header. 1-0.
"In practice we teach
the kids to swing crosses in from there. Peter played a great cross and
Jeff was there to finish it off"
Coach Fugate said referring to Coggan's winning goal.
For Jeff, it was his
sixth goal of the year to go with four assists. The rest of the game
went as normal with the final whistle signaling the first win of 4
needed.
"We knew we had a job
to do. It wasn't great today, but we did what we needed. It was a nice
finish, but give credit to Sacred Heart. They played us tough" said John
Basanese following the game.
The Warriors will take
on the Bellarmine Bells on Tuesday in another must win game. The game
will be at 3:15 and the forecast is for sun. Don't miss the
biggest game of the season.
Game Notes: For
Jeff Coggan, the goal was his 5th game winner, 19th overall, and 10th
WCAL goal. His 5 game winning goals puts him one behind his brother
Jimmy Coggan for the most in school history...The clean sheet was the
15th in WCAL for Ben Hansen's career.

Austin Keeling asked Laurie Stribling to
the upcoming dance after the game, and she said yes!
